Currently, there is no objective data on the exact role or number of North Korean military personnel present in Ukraine. Reports suggest there could be five brigades, but there is no clear information on their size or technical equipment.

This was written by Andriy Kovalenko, Head of the NSDC Center for Countering Disinformation.

Details

As Kovalenko notes, North Korea is the only country that has officially agreed to deploy its troops in Ukraine. Foreign military personnel present in the occupying army so far have been mercenaries, who signed contracts on an individual basis. Several countries have already declared Russia's actions of recruiting their citizens illegal and demand their return home, including Cuba and India.

"It has been announced that North Korean military personnel will receive unprecedented salaries for this country, at the level of $800. It is declared that the North Koreans will rebuild the civilian infrastructure of Donetsk, but the question of whether Korean specialists will be involved in the construction of military facilities remains open," Kovalenko noted.

The Head of the CCD says there is a possibility, that North Korean specialists could bring the experience of "tunnel warfare" to Ukraine, which is well-known from the Korean War era.

"This is already partially used by the Russians, in particular near Toretsk and in Avdiivka. At the moment, there is no information on the possible use of North Korean troops directly in hostilities," he noted.
