Political analyst Sazonov reports that EU delegation counsellor in Ukraine, who criticized KhNPP completion, previously supported Nord Stream
The EU’s position on the development of nuclear energy in Ukraine remains neutral.
Torsten Woellert, Counsellor of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, who was recently identified as the author of a private letter critical of the completion of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (KhNPP), had previously been a strong advocate for the construction of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline.
This was reported by political analyst Kyrylo Sazonov on his Facebook page.
According to Sazonov, in an interview with Reuters and in materials published by WikiLeaks, Thorsten Woellert openly supported Nord Stream, describing the project as essential for Europe and arguing that Europe needed more Russian gas. Moreover, Woellert claimed that Russian pipelines posed no threat to Ukraine, asserting that Ukraine itself was creating transit problems due to tariff disputes and outdated infrastructure.
"By Mr. Woellert’s logic, constructing Nord Stream pipelines is appropriate and aligns with European interests, but completing the Khmelnytskyi NPP in Ukraine is somehow "not European,” Sazonov remarked.
It is worth noting that the EU’s official position on the development of nuclear energy in Ukraine remains neutral. EU representatives, including Head of Delegation Katarína Mathernová, have previously emphasized that this is an internal matter for Ukraine.
However, Wöllert’s private letter expressing a critical stance on the completion of the KhNPP energy units has sparked widespread discussion among the deputies.
