Rebuilding of Mariupol May Cost up to $14 billion – Mayor
It may take up to 10 years to restore the ruined city to its original condition.
Rebuilding of Mariupol temporarily controlled by the Russian Army will likely cost at least $14 billion. It will take 7-10 years in order to restore the city to its original condition, the Mariupol City Council reports with the reference to the city’s Mayor Vadym Boichenko.
According to him, during the city siege the Russian invaders have damaged or destroyed 1356 apartment blocks and bombed 40% of private houses. Most of them are damaged beyond repair, therefore, the current plan is to implement new housing development program.
According to preliminary expert estimates, rebuilding of ruined infrastructure to accommodate 220 thousand residents may cost at least USD 14 billion. Although, the final figures will be determined only after de-occupation and survey of the destroyed housing. The European Investment Bank and major Ukrainian business have already expressed their willingness to assist in the reconstruction project.
"We are cooperating with the various experts from cities destroyed during the World War II. These are Gdansk, Warsaw, Dresden, Rotterdam. We are studying their cases and restoration experience. We hope that the “Marshall Plan” for Ukraine will have a separate section dedicated solely to Mariupol. I express my gratitude to the President of Ukraien Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the European Investment Bank for their continuous attention to our city. Mariupol will be rebuilt even better than it originally was”, Vadym Boichenko noted.
