On Sunday evening, August 18, a combined hostile attack struck Sumy State University.

Serhiy Kryvosheyenko, Head of the Sumy City Military Administration, reported this in a Telegram post, sharing images of the destruction.

According to him, the assault involved ballistic missiles and drones. One university building was engulfed in flames following a drone strike overnight. Firefighting efforts persisted until the morning of August 18, but the structure is now inaccessible, flooded with water.

Other buildings endured missile strikes the previous evening, with hundreds of windows shattered in two academic blocks and the library, alongside damaged walls and facades. Adjacent five-story residential buildings also sustained significant damage, with windows and balcony frames blown out.

University staff, alongside rescuers, are clearing debris and attempting to salvage surviving furniture and equipment. Charred walls, glass shards, and water from firefighting efforts now encircle the buildings.

“Sumy State University after ballistic and drone strikes: one building destroyed, severe damage to structures, hundreds of windows shattered,” Kryvosheyenko wrote.

Efforts to eliminate the attack’s consequences continue, with all relevant city services mobilized.
