Russia Has Already Used Iranian Fighting UAVs in Ukraine – AFU Airforce
AFU Airforce confirms Russia’s use of Iranian Shahed 136 and other UAVs in Ukraine.
According to Yurii Ihnat, the Spokesman of the AFU Airforce, this the goal is extremely complex and, to bring down just such goals, additional systems are needed.
" As for Iran, yes, there is data that the Russian army really receives and already uses (the Iranian UAVs – ed.). We've seen one UAV already shot down - it's a Shahed 136. t is a loitering munition, actually a kamikaze drone. It is clear that this target is extremely difficult, and we need additional systems to shoot such targets down and, of course, extreme vigilance of our personnel”, Ihnat said.
According to him, this is a new weapon for Russia, but it is desperately needed by invasion troops. Ihnat believes that the enemy will likely use against Ukraine other types of Iranian drones as well, so it is important to stay alert.
" These are the new challenges, and there will be an adequate response and the new methods of countering them", Ihnat assured.
Ihnat expressed hope that, in response to the supply of such arms for Russia from Iran and other authoritarian countries, the democratic world would provide advanced weapons to Ukraine.
Shahed 136 loitering munition is not considered a precise weapon. It’s range is likely around 1000 kilometers, and it is capable of carrying a warhead weighing 50 kilograms. Its rated maximum flight range is 2.5 thousand kilometers. These drones fly at an altitude of between 60 and 4000 meters with a cruising speed of about 180 km/h. The UAV has a loud MD 550 or 3W motor, so this strike drone can be easily heard from the distance. It can be shot down with any air defense systems and detected using the radar.
