Russian Air Forces Have Used New Dangerous Weapon: What Is Known about UPAB-1500V Bombs
A bomb dropped from an aircraft is designed to hit highly protected targets at a range of up to 40 km.
For the first time, bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces have used the 1500 kg UPAB-1500V guided barrage bombs against Ukraine, Defense Express reports citing its own sources.
The Russian bomb UPAB-1500V was first demonstrated in Russia only in 2019.
Its first use during the war in Ukraine was recorded a few weeks ago against a facility in the Chernihiv Region. At that time, one of the fragments had remnants of markings that corresponded to the UPAB-1500V.
The developer of this munition is the State Enterprise "Region", which is part of the Tactical Missile Defense Corporation.
During its presentation at the MAKS exhibition in 2019, it was reported that this bomb had already been tested and adopted.
The threat of using the UPAB-1500V is that the bomb is equipped with an inertial and satellite navigation system and has a warhead weighing 1010 kg designed to hit highly protected targets. The aircraft can drop it 40 kilometers from the target, although the carrier must climb to an altitude of 14 kilometers.
The use of this ammunition is currently sporadic. For a long range, it is necessary to raise the aircraft to a considerable altitude, which makes it easier to identify targets and the possibility of hitting the carrier.
It is likely that the Su-34 frontline bomber shot down near Yenakiyevo the day before was flying with such ammunition.
