Russian offensive in Sumy region: Where fighting is ongoing and what has been captured so far

In Sumy region, where Russian forces are conducting an offensive, active combat is taking place in specific border areas, particularly near the settlements of the Khotin and Yunakivka communities.

This was reported by Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleh Hryhorov, on Thursday, May 29.

According to him, the enemy is operating in small groups, trying to infiltrate border villages and establish footholds.

«The situation along the contact line is constantly changing — in some areas, we have the initiative; in others, the enemy is active. However, our Defense Forces are holding the line. The Armed Forces of Ukraine, border guards, the National Guard, and all components of the Defense Forces are heroically repelling the occupiers,» the head of the regional administration said.

Hryhorov urged residents of border areas in Sumy to evacuate in a timely manner. According to him, more than 50 people have been evacuated from the border communities of Sumy region.

What DeepState is reporting

The monitoring channel DeepState reports that enemy activity in Sumy region is intensifying daily.

«The constant pressure from infantry is taking its toll, and previous successes are motivating the Russians to build on them,» the channel notes.

According to DeepState, the status of several settlements — Vodolahy, Volodymyrivka, and Kostiantynivka — is currently uncertain. These villages are in a «gray zone,» as active assault operations are ongoing and there is no confirmed control by either side.

«We are in contact with many soldiers from various units defending that area, and interestingly, they all describe the situation differently. For us, accurate and verified information is more important than speed of reporting, so after confirming the real situation, we will update the map accordingly,» the channel stated.

Furthermore, DeepState reports that the enemy is targeting the settlements of Khotin and Yunakivka. Russian forces have already approached Yunakivka closely and are attempting assault operations toward the village.

«Yunakivka has many buildings that have always offered the enemy places to hide, gather, and entrench. If the enemy manages to take control of the village and the nearby high ground, there is a real threat of FPV drone strikes on Sumy,» the channel’s analysts warned.
