Unusual Russian Cruise Missile Was Shot Down Over Kyiv: Known Details
The Russians are testing new methods of breaking through Ukrainian air defense.
The Russian Kh-55 missile with a simulated nuclear warhead shot down over Kyev on November 17th was not intended for direct strike, but could have been used as an additional means to break through the Ukrainian air defense, as Oleh Katkov, editor-in-chief of the military portal Defense Express, told during to TSN YouTube channel.
When asked how to explain the launch of such an unusual missile by the invaders, the military expert said:
"In my opinion, the matter here is not about intimidation. They have tried intimidation tactics and talked about the possibility of using tactical nuclear weapons for quite a long time. The simulator is a mass-sized model of a nuclear warhead. It could have been launched with an intention to overload our air defense. The more missiles are launched, the higher the chances are that at least some of them will break through."
Katkov also noted that such Kh-55 missiles could be equipped with extra facilities, such as electronic warfare systems.
"This missile flies together with others, interferes with radar surveillance and provides a defense breakthrough. As we can see, it didn't work, because it was shot down."
According to him, there is no exact information yet on how many more X-55 missiles the Russians have, because such weapons were not subject to any strategic arms treaties with the United States.
"It's a nuclear warhead simulator. Most likely, it was used not for the purpose of striking, but for the purpose of adding extra chance to break though the air defense", Katkov explained.
