What losses does Ukraine's economy suffer from prolonged air alarms: an expert's answer
The economist suggests declaring a warning alarm during MiG takeoffs and not halting business operations.
If previously, air alerts due to MiGs lasted for 20 minutes, now they can extend to 3 hours or more
In recent days, in Ukraine, air alerts can last 3-4 hours due to MiG-31K flights.
Economist Oleh Pendzyn, during the telethon broadcast, explained how prolonged air alerts affect the economy.
He reminded that, first of all, retail outlets, catering establishments, as well as public transport experience losses.
"At the end of 2022, preliminary estimates of possible losses related to air alerts were made. At that time, a 3-4 hour air alarm was assessed, and the estimate was at the level of minus UAH 7.4 billion from GDP," Pendzyn says.
The expert suggests announcing a warning alarm during the takeoff of MiGs and not stopping business operations.
"Primarily, it's the budget that suffers, affecting the ability to finance defense. If businesses aren't operating, it means fewer taxes. Regarding people, if businesses aren't operating, people will lose jobs. All expenses for rent and employee salaries will eventually be shifted onto the final product's cost," he added.
