Ukraine wants to see a "strong" decision made at the NATO summit in Washington in July 2024.
This was stated by Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, in an interview with Reuters.
"Ukraine wants to see a strong decision made at the NATO summit in Washington next month, as Kyiv seeks to advance its strategic goal of joining the military Alliance," Zhovkva said in an interview with Reuters before his trip to Luxembourg for a meeting with European Union ministers.
The negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, which took place on June 25, indicate that Kyiv also hopes for concrete results from the NATO summit.
Zhovkva believes that this summit "must make a firm decision, particularly regarding Ukraine. Otherwise, the event will be futile." However, he did not specify the potential consequences of a lack of results.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and official Washington have stated that they do not expect the 32 member states of the Alliance at the July 9-11 summit to extend an invitation to Kyiv, which is at war with Russia, to join NATO. Nevertheless, Stoltenberg hopes that Ukraine is getting closer to this goal.
"We deserve a firm decision. Any decision by NATO is made by consensus. We all know this, and we understand that perhaps this time a consensus will be formed again," Zhovkva said.
Zhovkva added that the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU was a "great boost" for Ukrainians.
"Now people are expecting positive decisions regarding European integration," he said.
