Overnight into June 17, Russian occupation troops launched a massive strike on Zaporizhzhia, deploying several waves of Shahed-type strike drones. Explosions rocked the city until dawn as enemy drones deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure and residential neighborhoods.

The insidious raid killed one person and left seven other civilians with injuries of varying severity. Around a dozen houses suffered severe destruction, and a massive fire broke out in one of the high-rises, leaving the building structurally unsafe.

TSN correspondent Daria Nazarova reported from the scene of yet another tragedy.

Attack on Zaporizhzhia: What we know so far

Currently, the entire street at the epicenter of one of the strikes is completely closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Large teams of DSNS rescuers have been working here non-stop since early morning. Using a specialized high-reach crane, firefighters are still meticulously dousing the structures and extinguishing the remaining smoldering embers. Experts have already officially declared the high-rise unsafe for habitation—a direct hit by an enemy drone completely destroyed the roof of the building and its entire top residential floor.

One of the initial Russian drones struck the building’s roof, instantly triggering a massive blaze. The blaze quickly engulfed the upper section of the structure, covering more than 800 square meters. Firefighters managed to fully contain the fire only shortly before dawn.

The shockwave from the drone’s detonation was powerful enough to blow out adjacent residential buildings and shatter local commercial and office spaces nearby.

Another enemy kamikaze drone struck further down in the residential sector. The second Shahed slammed at full speed directly into a residential building, severely tearing through the structure and ripping apart neighboring private properties.

A large family with children was inside when the drone struck. They recall being terrified, and between the first and second explosions frantically tried to pack their things and flee to the nearest safe shelter, but time was catastrophically short.

Fatality near university and widespread destruction

Beyond the residential blocks, Russian drones inflicted heavy damage on a historic campus building of the local university. A civilian man caught outdoors at that fatal moment was killed instantly by an explosion right next to the historic landmark. The blast wave shattered the university’s panoramic windows and heavily damaged its unique on-site museum.

According to official assessments by Zaporizhzhia municipal authorities, the massive overnight enemy attack left nine major residential buildings damaged or ruined across the Oleksandrivskyi and Kosmichnyi districts.

Impacted neighborhoods remain a hive of activity. Emergency municipal crews have already scrambled to temporarily board up blown-out windows with OSB sheeting to shield apartments from the elements. Comprehensive recovery operations led by emergency services are ongoing to clear the debris and assist affected residents.
