During meetings with the finance ministers of Canada and Germany, as well as IMF leadership, Ukraine’s Finance Ministry outlined ways to meet Ukraine’s financial needs for 2026.

This was highlighted in a post by Ukraine’s Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko on May 22.

«We are wrapping up work on the sidelines of the G7 financial meetings in Canada. A packed agenda: meetings with the finance ministers of Canada and Germany, IMF leadership, discussions on Ukraine’s recovery and investment potential with Canadian businesses, and, of course, the traditional G7 session dedicated to Ukraine, ” he wrote.

Marchenko noted that he received signals of continued support from allies.

«It’s extremely important that I received clear signals — support for Ukraine will continue. The key topic raised with partners was how to meet Ukraine’s financial needs for 2026, ” he stated.

The minister revealed that discussions are ongoing about integrating Ukraine’s military potential into Europe’s defense system.

«I am confident that such a decision offers strategic advantages for Ukraine, including maintaining financial stability in 2026 and beyond, and for the EU, protection against potential Russian aggression. After all, the Ukrainian army has all the necessary experience, ” he said.

What Ukraine offers to G7 countries

«What we propose: partner participation in funding Ukraine’s Armed Forces and, accordingly, integrating the Ukrainian army into Europe’s defense system, ” Marchenko reported.

According to him, the costs of supporting Ukraine’s Armed Forces for Europe’s security would constitute a small fraction of the EU’s GDP. These costs could be distributed among countries willing to join the initiative and included in their defense spending calculations under NATO commitments.

«Given the military risks, Europe is already seeking ways to strengthen its defense, including by increasing military personnel. However, building such capacity would take years and significant resources. Integrating Ukraine’s Armed Forces is an effective solution with economic benefits for partner countries, ” the minister explained.

He also emphasized that supporting Ukraine is an investment in Europe’s stability.
