There are two negotiation formats in which progress can be made and peace in Ukraine can be brought closer. These are formats at the leaders’ level.
President said this in his address on August 21.
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that real progress in ending the war is possible only in two formats:
- Bilateral: Ukraine and Russia;
- Trilateral: Ukraine, the USA, and Russia.
According to him, these options were discussed in Washington and were also raised during a conversation between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Right now, the signals from Russia are, frankly, indecent. They are trying to avoid the need for a meeting. They don’t want to end this war. They continue massive attacks against Ukraine and very intense assaults on the front lines,” Zelenskyy also stated.
The President stressed that the Russians launch missiles at American enterprises, as well as at many other completely civilian targets.
“Moreover, very close to the borders of the European Union and NATO — a Russian attack drone entered Polish territory. There have also been very troubling incidents with drones in Lithuanian territory. This is not, you know, something accidental. This is Russian audacity. We expect our partners’ response to be principled,” he said.
“This war must be ended”
According to Zelenskyy, to end the war, pressure must be applied to Russia. Only through this can results be achieved, as Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin understands nothing but force and pressure.
“Of course, we are doing and will continue to do everything necessary to protect our state and our people. The President of the United States is absolutely right: this must be done not only in defense. At the same time, we are not reducing our diplomatic efforts, in all our contacts with partners, to ensure that negotiations take place — ones that can bring us closer to peace,” Zelenskyy added.
