Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha welcomed the threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tough sanctions on Russia and countries that purchase its oil — potentially within just nine days.
The diplomat made this statement in an interview with Yle.
According to Sybiha, Trump is the only person Russian dictator Vladimir Putin fears. The minister believes that anti-Russian sanctions are bringing peace closer.
At the moment, all countries are closely watching whether Trump will follow through on his promises, Sybiha said.
«Sanctions must be devastating for the Russian economy. They must prevent Russia from fueling its war machine and trading with third countries,» the foreign minister said.
He emphasized that many countries still buy oil from Russia, and Ukrainians are paying for this with their own blood. Among such countries, he mentioned China and India.
According to Sybiha, Ukraine’s goal is to end the war this year. At the same time, in his view, Russia only pretended to engage in peace negotiations in order to buy time and seize more Ukrainian territory.
The foreign minister also reminded that achieving peace is not only in Ukraine’s interest.
«Right now, Ukraine is a guarantor of security. The way this war ends will impact the security of Europe and other regions. This must be understood, and we must jointly force Russia to peace, ” Sybiha concluded.
