Trump’s retreat from the war in Ukraine: Expert names dire consequences

Donald Trump, who actively "inserted himself" into the Russia-Ukraine war, is now stepping back. According to an expert, this could lead to reduced global attention to the war and increased losses.

U.S. President Donald Trump, from the start of his second term, deeply engaged in the Russia-Ukraine war, making his current withdrawal appear as an admission of failure. This significantly undermines not only American interests but also the broader global order.

This opinion was expressed by Valerii Pekar, a lecturer at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School and UCU Business School, entrepreneur, and public figure.

Pekar noted that immediately after the U.S. presidential election, well before the inauguration, he outlined the most likely scenario for Trump’s policy. He predicted that the American leader would quickly shift the burden of the Ukraine war onto Europe, declaring that he had more pressing matters elsewhere. According to Pekar, expecting American aid or direct pressure on Russian president Vladimir Putin was unrealistic.

“I was certain this would happen shortly after the inauguration, allowing Trump to maintain a victorious image and the dignity of the leader of the world’s foremost nation. It would appear as a strategic decision, a recalibration of America’s priorities. Initially, it seemed to align with this: Vance’s speech in Munich, Trump’s talks about Greenland, Canada, Mexico, and Panama. However, stepping back from the role of "big brother" happened after four months filled with negotiations, calls, missions, draft agreements, speeches, and interviews,” Pekar stated.

He emphasized that instead of disengaging from the war in Ukraine, Trump actively immersed himself in it, dedicating attention to it daily.

“Now, this withdrawal looks like an admission of failure. This severely damages not only American interests but also the global picture, where there are supposed to be "adults in the room." Such a shift not only heightens risks around Taiwan and Israel but also creates new zones of risk in unforeseen places,” Pekar explains.

The threats to Ukraine

Pekar also outlined the negative consequences of Trump’s policy for Ukraine, including reduced global attention to the war, increased losses, fatigue, and disillusionment. However, he highlighted a positive aspect. “Europe has had time to wake up.” Ukraine’s experience has become even more valuable for other countries, and Russia is closer to its downfall, the lecturer believes.

“Let’s not be overly optimistic or disillusioned; let’s not lose hope and continue supporting the Defense Forces,” Pekar concludes.
