Ukraine moving toward a Korean-style end to the war – Expert explains what it means

The Korean scenario involves freezing the war and recognizing a demarcation line. According to Dmytro Sniehyrov, this is beneficial for Ukraine.

The United States is pushing for a freeze in the war in Ukraine with recognition of a demarcation line, but not the state border. Such proposals satisfy Kyiv and are gradually bringing the country closer to a Korean-style end to the war.

This opinion was expressed by military expert and co-chair of the Prava Sprava NGO Dmytro Sniehyrov, Espreso reports.

The expert notesthat most likely “we are gradually approaching a Korean-style end to the war.” According to him, proposals from the American side, paradoxically, satisfy Ukraine.

“This is not about ending the war in the classical sense, that is, signing a treaty, which Russia emphasizes, because that is de jure recognition of the state border line and an actual renunciation of territories. The American side insists on freezing the conflict: recognizing the demarcation line, but not the state border line. Accordingly, these conditions make it possible to neutralize the main threats from the Russian side,” Sniehyrov explains

He recalled how earlier Russian pesident Vladimir Putin and other top officials from the aggressor country said: "And who will sign on behalf of Ukraine?", claiming the alleged illegitimacy of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and insisting on holding elections. In this way, the Russians were dragging out the nature of ending the war.

In the expert’s opinion, the scenario proposed by Washington should satisfy Moscow’s scenario regarding the “illegitimacy” of the Ukrainian authorities.

“The scenario proposed by the Americans, which involves taking the demarcation line into account and actually ending active hostilities, but without recognizing de facto or de jure the lost territories, should fully satisfy the Russian scenario regarding the illegitimacy of the Ukrainian authorities,” Sniehyrov said.

He is convinced that this scenario, in historical perspective, leaves the possibility for Ukraine to regain its territories. As an example, the expert cited France’s historical experience, when the country regained Alsace and Lorraine 40 years after German occupation. And Germany itself, after 50 years of Soviet occupation, reunited into a single country.

“Such scenarios would be the most ideal for us,” Sniehyrov believes.
