Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov has arrived in the United States for negotiations with American officials, sources in political circles confirmed to TSN.ua.
According to the source, one of Ukraine’s lead negotiators is currently in Miami, where he is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with U.S. government representatives.
Umerov has already reported on the start of his visit to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Office of the President stated that additional details regarding the negotiation process will be released shortly.
The visit was previously reported by Reuters, which noted that the talks come amid a virtual stalemate in the peace settlement process between Ukraine and Russia. According to the agency, Kyiv had long expected a visit from U.S. special envoys, but the trip was delayed as Washington’s focus shifted to the situation in the Middle East.
War in Ukraine — why negotiations reached an impasse
Journalists note that Russia continues to demand Ukraine withdraw its forces from the Donetsk region, including areas Moscow has failed to capture. Ukraine rejects any territorial concessions.
The last round of trilateral talks involving U.S. representatives took place in February 2026. Since then, the parties have held only separate consultations with American officials.
Reuters also highlights a new surge in tension surrounding Russia’s proposed «truce» for May 8–9. Kyiv believes the Kremlin seeks a temporary ceasefire solely to ensure the safety of its military parade in Moscow.
Ukraine proposed its own ceasefire format starting May 6, but reports indicate Russia has already violated it. Meanwhile, Moscow has threatened strikes on central Kyiv if the Russian capital is attacked. Ukraine stated it would respond symmetrically to any Russian actions.
