The planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is being postponed due to the position of the Russian Federation.
This was stated by political analyst Ihar Tyshkevich on the air of «Kyiv24».
According to him, the Kremlin is currently not interested in quick substantive negotiations. It seeks to gain military advantages on the front, which can be presented as a «victory» and used as leverage to improve its negotiating positions.
«Putin is spending time to get better negotiations for himself. This means getting something that can be shown as a victory on the front,» Tyshkevich explained.
Ukrainian issue and Trump-Xi axis
The analyst emphasises that the issue of regulating or freezing the Russian-Ukrainian war will now be discussed on a broader foreign policy arena, including at major negotiations involving President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which are expected no earlier than the beginning of next year.
Tyshkevich recalled that in February this year, when Trump began talking about the war, he noted that China might join the process. However, according to Tyshkevich, the algorithm of pressure only from Donald Trump «did not work».
Kremlin manipulations and refusal of meeting
Tyshkevich believes that Russia is manipulating the situation and deliberately dragging out time, using the old tactic of constantly shifting deadlines and putting forward additional conditions. He recalled that earlier Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated the need for a «constructive» position from Trump.
As of today, understanding that Putin will not get a deep compromise in his favour, and realising that the model of settling or freezing the war will be discussed in detail precisely at the US-Chinese meetings, Kremlin spokesmen will likely declare that «now is not the best time» for a meeting. According to Tyshkevich, under such political circumstances, a Trump–Putin meeting could not yield any results.
