The aggressor state Russia had been preparing attacks on Poland since July, using Polish and Lithuanian SIM cards and 4G modems in its drones. Warsaw was reportedly warned.

This was reported by analysts of the Defense Express project.

It is noted that at the beginning of July, information was spread in Poland that fragments of downed Russian UAVs in Ukraine contained 4G modems with SIM cards of Polish and Lithuanian operators. In particular, journalist Marek Budzisz wrote about this, citing a report dated July 2. It contained various details, including the locations where Russian drones had been shot down.

“This may indicate either preparations for testing attack corridors directed against both countries — since they use cellular networks to adjust drone flight paths — or the possibility of intensifying strikes on western Ukraine. The task of Polish intelligence services is to determine who purchased the SIM cards, as registration is required after purchase,” the Polish journalist wrote on Platform X.

The reports also emphasized that “we consider it necessary to inform partners in Poland and Lithuania about the discovery of SIM cards from Polish and Lithuanian providers in Russian long-range strike UAVs.”

Apparently, this was done, since a week later these documents were already in the possession of a Polish publicist, Defense Express notes. However, analysts stress that this information caused little resonance in Poland itself — even though Russian drones began consistently entering its airspace during the summer.

“Mobile internet on Russian drones is necessary for transmitting data directly from the UAV and adjusting its flight. Depending on the additional equipment installed on the drones, Russia can obtain information about the functioning of air defense and electronic warfare systems, as well as transmit visual data from cameras,” Defense Express analysts emphasized.

It is currently unknown whether the Russian drones that attacked Poland last night contained such equipment. At the same time, the assumption that one of the purposes of this attack was reconnaissance of Poland’s air defense system is quite plausible. This is especially the case, experts note, given that Russian-Belarusian exercises “Zapad-2025” are set to begin on Belarusian territory on September 12.
