Russia has become the leading supplier of buckwheat to the United States, overtaking Canada by using trade loopholes that allow the product to bypass existing restrictions.

Russia ranked first among exporters of buckwheat to the United States in January–October 2025, overtaking long-time leader Canada. According to US statistics, shipments of Russian buckwheat totalled $1.8m, compared with $1.6m worth of supplies from Canada, UkrAgroConsult reported.
The publication notes that this is Russia’s highest result since 2022, when exports reached $3.3m. Although the volumes are small by global trade standards, Russian propaganda has already used them as evidence that sanctions are ineffective.
Experts say the outcome reflects not a surge in demand but the specifics of US trade legislation. Tariff policies introduced under Donald Trump complicated agricultural imports from a number of countries, leaving Russia in a relatively advantageous position by allowing it to continue exporting non-sanctioned goods without additional tariffs.
By comparison, exports from other suppliers were significantly lower:
- Ukraine - $155,300;
- China - $121,700;
- Lithuania - $119,700.
