Andrii Matiukha Foundation supported Okhmatdyt surgeons: surgeries with the new system
In April 2025, the National Specialized Children's Hospital "Okhmatdyt" began using the new Thompson surgical system.
The equipment is designed for emergency surgery. It was delivered with the support of charitable organizations — the Andrii Matiukha Foundation and Good Donations. The system cost amounted to UAH 2.22 million.
Since its installation, doctors have already performed more than 60 complex surgical procedures. This was reported by Roman Zhezhera, head of the emergency surgery department. According to him, the patients included children with cancer, congenital malformations, and mine-blast injuries.
The emergency surgery department at "Okhmatdyt" operates 24/7, providing medical care to children from all regions of Ukraine. Each year, it performs more than 300 surgical procedures using this modern retractor system.
The Thompson system allows the surgeon to keep their hands free and provides a clear view of the surgical field. This enables greater precision and makes the procedure safer. As noted by the hospital, this is especially important in pediatric surgery, which requires the highest degree of accuracy.
Structural advantages of the surgical system
The Thompson retractor system is used in several fields:
abdominal surgery;
thoracic surgery;
neurosurgery;
orthopedic surgery;
oncological surgery.
The system’s design helps reduce surgery time. It eases the physical load on the surgeon and lowers the risk of tissue damage. This is particularly relevant when operating on critically ill patients or those requiring urgent intervention.
According to doctors, equipment of this level directly affects the quality of treatment. The technical characteristics of the Thompson system allow tasks to be performed with high precision and minimal trauma.
The delivery of the equipment, initiated by Andrii Matiukha, was an example of targeted support. The equipment was immediately put to use in the department. The application of this system has become a standard practice for the hospital's surgeons.
Other projects
In May 2025, with the foundation’s participation, the international art installation ORIGAMI for UKRAINE was opened.
Financial aid in the amount of UAH 1 million was also provided to support families of those killed in the missile strike on Kryvyi Rih on April 4, 2025. The support targeted families who lost children due to the shelling.
