In a massive drone strike overnight into September 17, Russia sought to disable the power infrastructure of Ukraine's railway network.

This was reported by Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration—Minister of Communities and Territories Development Oleksiy Kuleba.

Kuleba noted that Russia is delivering targeted strikes against Ukraine's railway infrastructure. Thus, in the overnight attack into September 17, the enemy attempted to knock out substations powering the railway network through a massive drone assault.

"Such strikes have a clear objective—to complicate the transport of passengers and cargo, to disrupt stable transport operations, and to exert additional pressure on people and the economy," the minister explained.

He reported that more than 20 passenger trains were en route during the Russian attack. Ukrzaliznytsia dispatchers halted them at safe distances, while staff took shelter. No injuries occurred among passengers or railway workers.

As of 08:00, the attack has caused delays exceeding one hour for 26 trains.

To ensure continued operations, Ukrzaliznytsia deployed over 20 reserve diesel locomotives. On sections where signaling and communication devices lost power, trains are still being permitted through in reserve mode to minimize delays.

For international routes to Poland, transfers will be arranged to Khelm and Przemyśl.

"The key point is that even such massive attacks will not halt Ukraine's transport arteries, and in particular the Ukrainian railway," Kuleba said.
