Russia claims Ukraine has almost no captive occupiers left: Defence Intelligence responds

Ukraine’s military intelligence refutes Russian claims about “tens of thousands” of Ukrainian prisoners.

The Russian Federation's claims that Ukraine supposedly has almost no Russian prisoners of war left following the “1,000-for-1,000” exchange deal are false.

This was stated by Andriy Yusov, a representative of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, in a comment to LIGA.net.

According to him, such assertions from the Russian side are lies “deliberately spread to sow panic and despair within Ukrainian society.” Additionally, Moscow is using these claims to boost hyper-patriotic sentiment inside the aggressor state Russia.

The intelligence representative stressed that there are no “tens of thousands” of Ukrainian prisoners in Russia, while thousands of Russian POWs remain in Ukrainian captivity. Moreover, the prisoner exchange pool will continue to grow.

“We do not comment on specific figures, but we are talking about thousands of Russian occupiers held in Ukrainian captivity,” Yusov said.

It is worth noting that after the first stage of the major exchange in May, the pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Mash claimed that only about 1,300 Russian servicemen remained in Ukrainian captivity, while Russia allegedly held “almost 10,000” Ukrainian soldiers.
