Russia preparing attacks on gas infrastructure: Energy Ministry reveals alarming scenario
Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s gas and energy infrastructure, while bad weather has further complicated the situation.
Shelling of Ukraine
Russian forces continue efforts to undermine Ukraine’s energy stability. In addition to power grids, gas infrastructure has also come under attack.
Ukraine’s Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk said this in comments to 24 Kanal.
Energy workers are operating in extreme conditions. Alongside clearing the aftermath of overnight attacks, repair teams are contending with adverse weather.
In particular, the enemy intensively shelled the Chernihiv region, damaging the network. Restoration work is being hampered by weather conditions.
Despite this, the ministry said that some of the impact of the bad weather and shelling has already been addressed, with electricity being restored to homes.
The occupiers are focusing particular attention on strikes against gas production and gas transmission infrastructure. The goal, the ministry said, is to undermine the heating season.
To minimize risks and ensure stable gas supplies to consumers, Ukraine has increased purchases from abroad.
“As for gas infrastructure, the enemy is also striking it. Additional imports of natural gas are currently under way to minimise the impact of the strikes,” Kolisnyk said.
The Energy Ministry has no illusions about the aggressor’s plans and is preparing for further attacks. For this reason, according to the deputy minister, scheduled gas imports will continue until the end of the heating season. This will allow the system to remain balanced even in the event of further damage to infrastructure facilities.
