Russian troops have made another attempt to destroy the Pechenihy Dam in the Kharkiv region, attacking it with six guided aerial bombs. Despite the enemy’s efforts to provoke a large-scale ecological disaster and cut off logistics routes, the situation remains under the full control of the Defense Forces.

Russian attack on the Pechenihy Reservoir

On Tuesday, April 14, Russian forces struck the Pechenihy Dam in the Chuhuiv district of the Kharkiv region. According to Oleh Synehubov, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, the occupiers launched six guided aerial bombs at the facility.

He says this is the region’s largest reservoir, which is critically important for Kharkiv and the entire surrounding area.

«This is the largest reservoir in the region and a critically important facility — for both Kharkiv and the entire territory,» he stressed.

Impact of the strike on the Pechenihy Dam

According to the 16th Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, four bombs landed near the hydraulic structures, while two struck the water. Military officials have characterized the strike as an act of ecocide, noting that it was deliberately timed during the spring flood season to maximize downstream flooding.

«Russia continues to pursue the shameful practice of ecocide: the cynicism of striking the dam during the spring flood,» the statement read.

Military officials noted that while the enemy failed to destroy the dam, they launched a psychological operation, claiming damage to the structure and an emergency water discharge.

«The dam has not been damaged. Water discharge is occurring in a planned, controlled manner. The situation is being fully monitored. Given the experience of previous treacherous attacks, rapid response plans for any force majeure circumstances have been developed in advance,» the 16th Army Corps said.

Background: The Pechenihy Reservoir

The Pechenihy Reservoir is a massive channel reservoir on the Siverskyi Donets River in the Kharkiv region. It is a critical infrastructure facility that provides water to over one million residents in Kharkiv.

The project dates back to the 1930s, when Kharkiv’s rapid growth outpaced its artesian well capacity. The dam itself was constructed between 1958 and 1962.

Scale: The reservoir stretches 75 km in length with a maximum depth of 14 meters. Every day, the Donets Water Utility supplies approximately 700,000 cubic meters of water to the city from this source.

Before the 2022 invasion, the village of Staryi Saltiv on its right bank was the region’s premier vacation spot, home to dozens of resorts and sandy beaches.

The Pechenihy Reservoir has long been in the occupiers' crosshairs

In December 2025, occupying forces attempted to destroy the Pechenihy Dam. According to the 16th Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the facility has long been a target of systematic terror. Russian forces have attacked the structure with their entire available arsenal — from Iranian-made «Shahed» drones and guided aerial bombs to various missile types, «Molniya» drones, and FPVs. Just recently, an enemy missile struck a nearby vacation village, completely destroying more than ten homes.

Military officials say that despite the enemy’s cynical attempts to trigger a disaster, comprehensive preparations for any force majeure have been made in advance:

  • bypass routes have already been developed and are operational, fully meeting the region’s transportation needs.

  • Ukrainian units have accumulated sufficient resources; therefore, the potential loss of transit across the dam will not affect the course of combat operations.

  • The Defense Forces possess specialized equipment and experts ready to deploy temporary crossings at a moment’s notice.

Why the occupiers are targeting the Pechenihy Dam

Military expert and former spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vladyslav Selezniov, notes that by attacking the Pechenihy Reservoir, the occupiers are attempting to complicate the logistics and supply lines of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

«The enemy is trying to maximize the destruction of our logistics, as they understand that resources are a decisive factor influencing the situation on the battlefield,» Selezniov said.

The military expert stresses that success in battle depends on having resources available at the right time.

«If we have a sufficient amount of resources in a specific place and at the right time, we will win. However, if there is a shortage of resources, the situation may develop in a negative direction for us,» he stated.
