Ukraine is interested in ending the war as quickly as possible but is prepared for any developments. The desired scenario remains a real ceasefire as soon as possible, and Ukraine is ready for the swiftest steps in this direction.

This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his evening address on Thursday, May 22.

Zelenskyy reported that during today’s meeting with military leadership, they discussed not only the situation at the front but also the “military basis for diplomacy,” specifically preparations for the next technical meeting with the Russians.

“We are working to ensure the meeting takes place as soon as possible. Our Ukrainian interest is not to prolong the war but to be ready for any developments. It is clear to the world that Russia is to blame for the war’s continuation. Ukraine is ready for swift steps — a real ceasefire and the establishment of a new security architecture,” the President noted.

He added that Ukraine is doing everything necessary on its part, and now a “mirrored readiness” from the Russians is needed.

“There is no such readiness [from Russia — ed.] yet, and without global pressure, this won’t change. We are providing our part of the pressure, and most importantly — through our defense and active measures,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

A government meeting was also held today with the participation of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Ministers, and the President’s Office team.

“We discussed the most critical economic steps — what can provide more stability for our people in the long term. Jobs, technological development, and guaranteed social opportunities for our people are the three key priorities,” the President explained.

According to him, preparations are also underway for a prisoner-of-war exchange agreed upon during negotiations in Istanbul.

“There were reports from intelligence and the Security Service of Ukraine regarding the lists provided by the Russians; specific details are being worked out. More meetings are forthcoming,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy added.
