Worst-case scenario for Kyiv: Energy experts warn of tough days ahead

Rather than the expected improvement, the capital faces darkness after an enemy attack inflicted far more serious damage on the energy system than initially appeared.

The situation in the capital’s energy system has become critical

Residents of Kyiv and the region will receive electricity for only 1.5–2 hours a day in the coming days due to a critical power deficit caused by overnight shelling on February 7 and the forced reduction of output from nuclear units.

The Energy Ministry said this after an emergency meeting on dealing with the aftermath of the emergency situation and deploying additional heating centers.

Strikes on generation facilities and nuclear plant reduction

A massive enemy attack caused significant damage to high-voltage substations and two thermal power plants, triggering an emergency reduction of output at nuclear plants. The loss of generating capacity has created a substantial energy deficit that cannot currently be offset, making consumption restrictions a necessary step to preserve grid stability.

DTEK also confirmed the critical state of infrastructure and said any stabilization outage schedules had been cancelled.

“The most difficult situation is in Kyiv. After prolonged strikes on infrastructure, electricity is now available for only 1.5–2 hours a day,” the company said.

Tough days ahead

Energy experts warn the coming days will be extremely challenging, as restoring full plant operations will take time. Emergency crews from Ukrenergo, Kyivteploenergo and municipal services are working around the clock to stabilize the system and supply electricity at least intermittently.

The city is rapidly deploying additional “Points of Invincibility” in every district to support residents. Authorities urged Kyiv residents to prepare for prolonged outages, charge devices and show understanding toward the emergency caused by Russian aggression.
