Russia’s army has an advantage on the frontline in the use of fibre-optic FPV drones that are protected from electronic warfare countermeasures.

Speaking in an interview with lb.ua, Syrskyi said the use of FPV drones was originally a Ukrainian innovation, but that Russian forces later began to catch up with Ukraine’s military both in numbers and in quality.

«Then fibre optics appeared. And here, unfortunately, the enemy gained an advantage. They were the first to start using it and improving its characteristics. Fibre optics now continue to play a decisive role because they are better protected, are not suppressed by electronic warfare, and their range and quality continue to increase, allowing them to be used in different conditions, both day and night, ” he said.

Syrskyi stressed that the enemy’s use of fibre-optic FPV drones expanded the so-called «kill zone».

«We have populated areas and sections that remain under our control, but they are under attack from enemy drones, ” he said.

Syrskyi notes that fibre-optic drones can only be destroyed mechanically, or countered using anti-drone systems or interceptor drones.

«This is, once again, a competition of technologies. Whoever deploys a greater number of high-quality systems gains an advantage on the battlefield and achieves success, ” he concluded.
