In the morning of November 22, Russian "Shahed" drones attacked a residential neighborhood in the city of Sumy. This time, the drones used by the occupiers were equipped with shrapnel. This weapon is intended to kill people, not destroy objects. As a result of the enemy strike, there are many victims.
All details can be found in the exclusive report on TSN.UA.
Attack on Sumy
Not a day without new shelling. On the night of November 22, Russian invaders launched strike drones toward Ukraine. Air raid alerts were sounded across several regions. At 1:57 a.m., the military reported the detection of the first enemy drones in Sumy region. The drones hovered over the region until morning, ultimately causing devastation.
In Sumy, four explosions were heard between 5:09 and 5:48 a.m. Acting Mayor of Sumy, Artem Kobzar, was the first to report casualties.
Later, he stated that a person was killed at the site of the second explosion in Sumy.
He also said that due to the ongoing threat of "Shahed" attacks, air defense systems were operated in the city and urged residents to stay away from windows.
"Shahed" attack on a residential neighborhood
According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Russian terrorists attacked a residential area in Sumy with "Shahed" drones that night:
"Preliminarily, there are casualties. Necessary assistance is being provided to people, and emergency rescue operations are underway. The aftermath of the Russian attack is being clarified."
At 6:47 a.m., the Regional Military Administration specified that, according to preliminary data, the attack on the residential neighborhood in Sumy resulted in two killed and 10 people with injuries of varying degrees of severity. Ten minutes later, the number of victims increased:
"As a result of the Russian attack on the residential neighborhood, preliminarily, two people were killed, and 12 were injured with varying degrees of severity."
Elimination of the consequences
The State Emergency Service confirmed this number of victims. Rescuers were simultaneously working at several locations, extinguishing fires and inspecting the areas. State Emergency Service personnel rescued two people from a severely damaged apartment building and transferred them to an ambulance. This was the morning experience of ordinary civilians in Sumy.
According to the Sumy City Council, the headquarters for the elimination of the aftermath of the drone strikes began its work at 8:00 a.m.:
"Representatives of the headquarters will operate at two locations: Schools No. 15 and No. 2. They will accept applications from affected residents for housing inspections and provide consultations on other issues. Necessary documents include: a passport, a tax identification number, and property ownership documents."
Prosecutor's Office launches investigation
Meanwhile, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported that, according to the investigation, at around 5:10 a.m. on November 22, 2024, the occupiers attacked civilian infrastructure in Sumy with three drones. Multi-story and private residential buildings, vehicles, and a service station were damaged.
"Under the procedural guidance of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder (Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)."
Drones with shrapnel
The drones that caused this tragic morning in Sumy and claimed the lives of two Ukrainians were equipped with shrapnel. This was reported by Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration Volodymyr Artyukh, in a comment to Suspilne. He noted that such weapons were designed exclusively to kill people. This shows that the Russians aim to destroy the civilian population of Ukraine, as evidenced by their previous attack on Sumy.
Previous attack on Sumy
Earlier, the Russians carried out another cynical strike on the city. The occupiers hit a residential building with ballistic missiles. Eleven people, including children, were killed, and dozens were injured. The first moments after the attack on the apartment building were filled with cries, the sound of breaking glass and fire.
The city was attacked before 9:00 p.m, just when people were going to bed. The densely built area targeted by the strike included five nine-story residential buildings in a courtyard arranged like a well.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar later stated that hundreds of people needed to be evacuated from the building and reported many killed and wounded.
In total, around 500 people were evacuated from damaged buildings. The Sumy City Council announced that the community was ready to provide temporary housing to those left without shelter. A help center was set up in a kindergarten near the strike site. By the morning of November 18, the number of injured had risen sharply: 89 people, including 11 children. Eleven people were killed, among them two children — a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.
But this was not all. Shortly after midnight, the enemy, likely using ballistic missiles, attacked critical infrastructure in Sumy, leaving the city without power supply. Hospitals receiving injured people were forced to operate on generators.
Power outages
On November 22, generator noise could be heard across the country. Power outages were planned for 16 hours, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., according to "Ukrenergo". The company reported that restrictions on electricity supply would vary. One schedule of outages would apply from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., while a two-schedule system would be in place from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The restrictions were necessary due to damage to energy facilities caused by Russia's massive missile and drone attack on November 17.
"Energy workers are working to repair the damage as quickly as possible to restore the equipment destroyed by the enemy," the company stated.
The scope and timing of restrictions may change during the day. Up-to-date information is available on the official pages of regional electricity providers.
The TSN.ua team expresses heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack on Sumy. Russia will inevitably be held accountable for the suffering of every Ukrainian, and light will triumph over darkness.
