Massive power outages for domestic consumers in Ukraine: electricity in short supply
The situation with electricity in Ukraine may improve by the fall. The CEO of "DTEK Energy" suggests this possibility.
It will not be possible to restore all energy facilities, damaged by the Russians, before the start of the heating season
What is the current state of the energy system, whether electricity is being exported abroad, and what to expect in terms of power and heat supply this winter in Ukraine, see in an exclusive story of TSN.ua.
The current state of Ukraine's energy system
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has attacked "DTEK Energy" facilities over 180 times. The most destructive shelling occurred in the spring and summer of 2024. In total, 90% of the company's capacity has been lost. However, energy workers are doing everything possible to restore lost capacity and improve the situation in Ukraine's energy system.
They repair equipment at their own expense, cooperate with the state and look for donor programs abroad.
Yuriy Boyko, a member of the supervisory board of "Ukrenergo," stated that Ukraine would not be able to restore energy facilities damaged by Russian forces by the beginning of the heating season.
"It is entirely clear that it will not be possible to fully restore what has been damaged or destroyed by the heating period," he said.
Boyko notes that preparation for winter is being carried out under entirely different conditions than two years ago, as Russia's missile strikes have caused massive destruction.
Energy workers work 24/7
Meanwhile, CEO of "DTEK Energy" Ildar Saleev, emphasizes that Ukraine has currently lost 9 gigawatts of capacity. He says that everything can be restored, but it is a matter of time and resources. According to the CEO of "DTEK Energy," some equipment will only be restored next year, not by the beginning of the heating season.
At the same time, DTEK's Executive Director Dmytro Sakharuk, speaking at the forum "The Future of Ukrainian Energy. Dialogues with NV," stated that Ukrainians should consider what they can do for themselves to get through the next winter more easily.
"Rely on yourself. I'm not joking. Everything is in our hands and depends on each of us. If everyone thinks about what they can do to get through the next winter and does something about it, they will certainly have an easier winter," he said.
Distributed generation
Ildar Saleev, CEO of "DTEK Energy," assures that both the company and the Ukrainian government already have a long-term action plan. These steps will reduce military risks and balance Ukraine's energy system.
No exports
The CEO of "DTEK Energy" notes that Ukraine is not selling electricity abroad. On the contrary, it is importing from neighboring countries. Moreover, Ukraine is not receiving free electricity.
When the situation with electricity will improve
Ildar Saleev suggests that the situation with electricity in Ukraine might improve by the fall. However, as for winter, the CEO of "DTEK Energy" says that it is challenging to make predictions, as everything will depend on various factors.
