Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, after a series of international negotiations, suggests changing the EU's policy on the war in Ukraine, particularly by restoring diplomatic relations with Russia.
This is detailed in his report to European Council President Charles Michel, based on the negotiations in Russia, the USA and China, with key points published on the Hungarian government's website.
According to Orbán, during his meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian president Volodymyr Putin, he became convinced that "the warring parties intend to become more deeply involved in the conflict, and neither wants to take initiatives for a ceasefire or peace negotiations."
Orbán identified global players capable of influencing developments as the European Union, the USA, China and Turkey. However, according to the Hungarian Prime Minister, China will not play an active role until there is certainty in the chances of its successful involvement. He predicted that after Donald Trump's expected victory in the elections, "the financial burden between the USA and the EU will significantly shift to the detriment of the EU when it comes to financial support for Ukraine."
Therefore, Viktor Orbán proposes changing the EU's "pro-war" policy, which he claims has been "copied" from the USA.
"So far, we have not had a sovereign and independent European strategy or political action plan. I propose discussing whether it is rational to continue this policy in the future. In the current situation, we can find a window of opportunity with a strong moral and rational foundation to start a new chapter in our policy," urges the Hungarian Prime Minister, who will chair the European Council for the next six months.
Orbán suggests creating conditions for a temporary ceasefire and/or the start of peace negotiations, including restoring direct diplomatic contacts with Russia.
Additionally, the Hungarian Prime Minister proposes holding high-level political talks with China and launching a "coordinated political offensive on the Global South," whose support, according to him, the EU has lost due to its stance on the war in Ukraine.
