Russia intensifies strikes on Ukrainian regional capital with drones, guided bombs and missiles

Two people have been killed and 15 injured in the latest attacks on the city. Across the wider region, Russian troops have struck nearly 700 times, launching almost 500 drones along with artillery, missiles and airstrikes. In recent days, Russian forces have been carrying out a heavy bombardment of the regional capital with air-dropped bombs.

The report comes from TSN correspondent Daria Nazarova.

Around midnight, the city was again targeted with high-explosive air-dropped bombs. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, Russian ordnance landed near the botanical garden.

The blast wave damaged nearby residential buildings and sparked a fire. Another bomb fell in a green area but failed to detonate.

For three consecutive days, Russian forces have been terrorising residents of Zaporizhzhia with these bombs. Such attacks from the air on the regional capital first began in September 2024, but the current bombardment is the most intense in a long time. More than 20 guided bombs have been dropped on the city in recent days.

“The main reasons are, first, that the enemy has upgraded its weapons. Second, on the night from Sunday to Monday, the enemy carried out a massive strike unlike anything before, launching 15 guided bombs within 20 minutes. That is a lot. Six were shot down. Nine reached their targets. A tenth was hit and fell in a field. So there are two reasons,” said Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration.

The attacks on civilians continue day and night. In addition to the guided aerial bombs, Russian forces are also using strike drones. On Monday afternoon they launched four "Shahed" drones and one missile at the city, hitting warehouse facilities and nearby parked cars. Fifteen people required medical assistance. One person was killed at the scene, and a 30-year-old man with critical injuries later died in hospital. In total, the Russian strikes have claimed five lives in Zaporizhzhia over the past three days.
