Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days to discuss American proposals for ending the war. He stressed that Kyiv cannot afford to lose U.S. support, as its strength is crucial to «bringing peace closer to reality» and compelling Russia to take its intentions seriously.
The President made this statement in his evening address to the nation on Thursday, November 20.
Importance of dialogue with Trump
Earlier, Ukraine received a set of proposals from a major American delegation — points of a plan to end the war. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that teams have already begun working on these proposals. He emphasized that support and direct dialogue with key U.S. figures are crucial for the next steps and clearly outlined his expectations.
«I expect to speak with President Trump in the coming days. We understand that America’s strength and support can genuinely bring peace closer, and we do not want to lose it, ” Zelenskyy emphasized.
This underlines how crucial Kyiv considers direct talks with Trump amid a push for intensified diplomacy.
Russia’s intentions and Ukraine’s position
President Zelenskyy also commented on Russia’s motives in the war, noting that the Kremlin currently has no genuine desire for peace and is only trying to buy time for the war and delay sanctions.
In this context, Zelenskyy believes that a strong U.S. stance could be decisive.
«America has the power to ensure that Russia’s willingness to end the war becomes serious. I will keep working on this full-time — all my efforts are focused on it right now, ” the President stated.
Ukraine aims to secure a «real and dignified peace» that honors its sovereignty and independence. Zelenskyy emphasized that Kyiv «will do everything to ensure that no one in the world can say that we are the ones blocking diplomacy.»
