One call could end Putin's war in Ukraine — but not from Trump

An expert believes that only one world leader has real leverage over the “führer”.

Vladimir Putin.

Vladimir Putin.

Ending the war that Russia’s “führer” Vladimir Putin launched in Ukraine could take just one phone call — from China’s Xi Jinping, not U.S. President Donald Trump.

Military expert and former SSU officer Ivan Stupak said this in a chat on Glavred.

He explains that Russia is heavily dependent on exports to China, relying on selling oil, gas, timber, coal and other commodities.

“China is profiting from Russia. Even Russians admit there are no Chinese partners — only Chinese traders. That’s why, in my view, the likelihood that China wants to end the war is minimal; it simply has no interest,” the expert stresses.

According to Stupak, China has shown little skill as a peace broker and has no real interest in ending the war in Ukraine. Instead, Beijing is focused on what concessions the West could provide in return for exerting pressure on Russia.

“So far, the Western world has nothing to offer. Preserving the American market? But the U.S. market depends on Chinese goods, there is no alternative. Even Trump’s "Make America Great Again" caps carry the label "Made in China." Trade between China and the U.S. amounts to $650 billion annually, with $350 billion in Chinese exports. That’s why I believe the United States has very few options for pressure,” he adds.
