President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the Russian authorities' proposal to cease fire on Saturday, May 9, during the traditional parade in Moscow involving Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian leader recalled that Kyiv had repeatedly offered the aggressor state a ceasefire.

"Ukraine proposed that Russia cease fire, and this is far from the first proposal. This time — to cease fire starting May 6. Ukraine was ready to ensure full silence, but in response to this peace proposal of ours, there were only new Russian strikes and new threats from Russia," he said.

Zelenskyy emphasized the cynicism of the Kremlin's proposal, which is aimed solely at allowing Putin to hold his parade on Red Square undisturbed.

"They want permission from Ukraine to hold their parade, to step onto the square safely for one hour once a year, and then go back to killing our people and fighting. Russian officials are already talking about strikes after May 9. Strange and definitely inadequate logic from the Russian leadership," the Ukrainian president said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy advised leaders of states close to Russia to cancel plans to visit Moscow on May 9.

"We also have appeals from some states close to Russia saying their representatives intend to be in Moscow. A strange desire... during these days. We do not recommend it," he said.
