In an interview with Face the Nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that there is currently a narrow «window of opportunity» for a diplomatic resolution to the war, which he believes should be seized before the onset of the next winter.
According to him, Russia began losing the initiative on the battlefield in late 2025, with its monthly casualties continuing to mount.
«I believe there is a window for negotiations because Russia will lose more and more of its troops every month. Currently, they cannot occupy more territory in a month than we are liberating,» Zelenskyy noted.
He stressed that Ukraine must consider the possibility of a diplomatic settlement.
«I believe we need to find a diplomatic path—to sit down and talk—before the beginning of next winter,» the president stressed.
Key factors shaping the prospects for talks
At the same time, Zelenskyy pointed out that the prospect of negotiations depends on several factors, including internal pressure within Russia, Western sanctions policy, and Moscow’s readiness for dialogue.
The president also outlined the potential role of international partners in the negotiation process. Specifically, he mentioned the E3 format (the UK, France, and Germany) as potential representatives of Europe, while separately highlighting the Nordic countries and Turkey as possible mediators.
«This must be decided by Ukraine and Europe. However, it is crucial that Russia is ready for dialogue and the presence of European partners,» Zelenskyy added.
