Black Sea on brink of ecological disaster from ghost tankers: Kremlin remains indifferent

Fuel oil emissions from tankers that crashed in the Kerch Strait almost a year ago are again being recorded on the beaches of Anapa.

Russia persists in ravaging the Black Sea, disregarding the fallout from a vast environmental calamity. Mazut leaks from the sunken vessels continue to seep into the waters, nearly ten months after the mishap.

The Center for Countering Disinformation reported this via Telegram.

Despite the incident unfolding almost ten months prior, the shipwrecks remain unraised from the seabed, allowing the fuel oil to keep contaminating the sea.

«Russia’s authorities display utter indifference to the ecological peril: instead of addressing the disaster’s repercussions, they remain focused on the war against Ukraine. This leads to the ongoing pollution of the Black Sea, which will have long-term effects on the region’s ecosystem, ” the Center said.

The tankers' aftermath is also afflicting Russians themselves—businesses along the Black Sea coast have incurred losses from a disastrous tourist season. Meanwhile, those vacationers who ventured to the resorts risked their health.

«Neglecting the catastrophe’s consequences reveals the full degradation of state governance in Russia—a system mired in war, now incapable of responding even to threats against its own environment and populace,» the Center for Countering Disinformation added.
