Russia is considering the possibility of postponing or even canceling parliamentary elections scheduled for September 2026.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the statement, citing Ukrainian intelligence.
According to him, the Russian authorities are facing growing economic and social problems that are becoming increasingly visible against the backdrop of the war against Ukraine.
«Russian intelligence services are already proposing to postpone or entirely cancel the ritual of electing United Russia to the State Duma. Their next imitation election was scheduled for September, and intelligence reports now show that Russia is not confident about the situation heading into September,» he said.
Zelenskyy notes that one sign of the deepening internal crisis is problems with fuel supplies. According to Ukrainian intelligence, shortages of gasoline and diesel fuel have already been recorded in more than 60 Russian regions.
Fuel prices rising across Russia
«There are already fuel shortages in more than 60 Russian regions. There has also been a sharp increase in gasoline and diesel prices, provided they are available at all,» the president said.
He linked the worsening situation in Russia to the Kremlin’s decision to continue the war against Ukraine despite international pressure and proposals for negotiations.
According to Zelenskyy, Moscow refuses to take real steps toward ending the hostilities and fails to respond to Ukrainian initiatives regarding meetings and a peaceful settlement.
«There are mounting difficulties, and all because Putin refuses to end his war and ignores our proposals for meetings, real negotiations, and a dignified peace,» he stated.
