The participation of Allen in the Moscow International Film Week drew strong condemnation from Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry wrote about this.

The American filmmaker’s action is a disgrace. Moreover, the MFA states that it insults the victims among Ukrainian actors and filmmakers who were killed or wounded by Russian war criminals:

“The MFA of Ukraine strongly condemns the participation of American director Woody Allen in the Moscow International Film Week. It is a disgrace and an insult to the sacrifice of Ukrainian actors and filmmakers who were killed or injured by Russian war criminals during Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” the statement reads.

The ministry emphasizes that this festival in Russia unites supporters and mouthpieces of Putin. By participating, Allen knowingly turns a blind eye to the atrocities Russia has been committing in Ukraine every day for the past 11 years.

“Culture must never be used to whitewash crimes or serve as a propaganda tool,” the MFA adds.
