Ceasefire on May 9: Political scientist explains Putin’s motives

The Russians are trying to avoid Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian territory.

The Kremlin is not confident that Moscow is fully protected from Ukrainian drone attacks. This is likely why Putin announced a so-called “ceasefire” during the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II.

This was stated by political scientist Oleksandr Leonov on KYIV24.

“Previously, Ukrainian drones reached Moscow and even struck the Kremlin. That’s why even a small spectacle like this could significantly damage Putin’s reputation among the guests attending the parade. If they have to go to shelters, it would be a blow to Putin’s image,” Leonov believes.

If Putin does not pursue a ceasefire starting May 1, Ukraine is not obligated to observe a ceasefire from May 7.

“No one consulted with us, and in this way, Putin is denying Ukraine’s agency. Let’s recall all these unilateral ceasefires. A ceasefire is the result of negotiations between two parties to be sustainable and respected. If we talk about the "Easter truce", the Russians did not adhere to it,” Leonov concluded.
