Russian dictator Vladimir Putin personally fears a ceasefire in Ukraine “because it would be difficult for him to resume the war once it stops,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a conversation with journalists.

In his view, Putin is gearing up for war with the West, which is why he cannot halt the war with Ukraine at this stage.

“Going from a full-scale war to a ceasefire and then restarting a full-scale war is not easy for them. Economically, it’s tough; with society, it’s tough; with the world, it’s tough. And it’s definitely tough with those countries that still shake his hand today. That’s why it’s so hard for the Americans to force him into real negotiations, and why he chooses war for now,” the President stated.

He outlined how Putin could be compelled to seek peace.

“More pressure on Russia is needed. Pressure will work. When they lose more from the war than they would in other scenarios. Our long-range strikes, strong sanctions, holding the line on the battlefield, defending ourselves, but also, undoubtedly, supporting peace initiatives—because that’s the right thing—will work,” Zelenskyy concluded.
