Pressure on Kyiv: Political analyst explains how Putin leverages Trump’s expectations

Negotiations in Moscow were only a small step toward a future ceasefire. In reality, Putin simply used the American delegation to “roll back” all the work done in Geneva, Florida, and elsewhere.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is playing on U.S. President Donald Trump’s expectations. His goal is to completely derail financial support for Kyiv.

Political analyst Ihor Chalenko said this during a Kyiv24 broadcast.

Putin sees this as a second Yalta

According to Chalenko, the Russian president wants bilateral talks — without Europe. They could be expanded to three participants, for example, by inviting China.

“This is Putin’s version of a second Yalta. Messages like "Putin is ready to compromise, but pressure Kyiv more" are all about playing on Trump’s expectation of a quick end to the war. It’s clear that Kyiv has already faced enough pressure,” Chalenko said.

The Atlantic reported on a pause in aid to Ukraine, but the information needs verification. If true, this would be the fourth time this year.

“I haven’t seen a similar tactic regarding Russia. Yes, we’ve seen sanctions imposed on India, on Rosneft, on Lukoil. This hits the Russians very hard. But most of the pressure is directed at official Kyiv. And we fully understand that the biggest issue here is territorial. Ukrainians simply refuse to leave their land — whether it’s a single square meter or 20–25% of Donetsk region,” Chalenko said.

Indeed, Putin is merely trying to derail further financial support for Kyiv.
