Since the summer of 2025, Russian forces have launched a wave of massive attacks on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure. In recent months, Russia has tested attacks using "Shahed" drones and other strike UAVs against Ukraine’s rail network.

Military analyst Denys Popovych said this in a Radio NV broadcast.

“With the installation of Starlink, their flight range is greater than the standard one. It is now clear they are trying to undermine cargo transportation from the Polish border. That is why strikes are being carried out along specific routes,” Popovych said.

Russian forces initially targeted railway infrastructure, including traction substations and junctions, and have now begun attacking individual diesel locomotives and railway depots. The strikes are complex, hitting energy substations, locomotive depots and passenger stations.

“They carried this out in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. They have now gradually moved to the Zhytomyr region, where logistics problems could be severe. The General Staff understands this, and certain countermeasures will be taken soon,” he added.
