Russia shifts to jet-powered UAVs: Impact on the front line
Russia is increasing its share of jet drones, which offer higher speeds but face range and payload limits, an expert noted.

Russia is gradually deploying more jet drones. While faster, these UAVs come with several technical constraints.
Retired Lieutenant General Ihor Romanenko, founder of the «Close the Sky over Ukraine» foundation, shared this on Kyiv24 TV.
He stated that jet drones are harder to build and carry smaller payloads, though the enemy attempts to upgrade them.
The expert explained that jet engines consume significantly more fuel, which directly cuts both flight range and explosive capacity.
«A jet engine requires more fuel, leaving less room for explosives and shortening the range. However, the Russians are trying to extend their radius and warhead power,» Romanenko said.
He added that high speed does not automatically guarantee higher strike efficiency.
«They fly fast, but fuel consumption spikes. This raises efficiency questions, as these systems are expensive and limited,» he noted.
According to Romanenko, despite modernization efforts, jet-powered drones remain a compromise between speed, range, and payload.
