The United States refused to deliver promised missiles to Ukraine for countering Iranian «Shahed» kamikaze drones and instead redirected them to the Middle East.
This was stated by Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with ABC News.
The President emphasized that Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of air defense systems, including «Patriot» systems, and warned of the consequences of such decisions:
«If the U.S. does not provide them to us — more losses. More people dying. We are looking for all the tools to destroy these „Shaheds,“ but the support of our allies is critically important,» Zelenskyy stressed.
According to the Head of State, an agreement had previously been reached between Kyiv and Washington regarding a project that involved the supply of 20,000 specialized munitions for combating «Shaheds.» These were not ordinary missiles but a special technology capable of effectively destroying drones.
«We had a project, agreed upon with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin — 20,000 special munitions for combating „Shaheds.“ These are not just missiles; it’s a special technology,» Zelenskyy explained.
He also emphasized that, after the initial agreements, the U.S. unexpectedly changed its decision:
«This morning, my defense minister told me that the U.S. had changed this decision — and these munitions were sent to another region — the Middle East.»
