«Cowardly» Polish reaction: Ex-ambassador Deshchytsia explains what lies behind Warsaw’s restraint

According to him, Warsaw’s cautious or, as Ukrainians on social media put it, «cowardly» reaction is linked to two factors: the desire to avoid sparking panic among Polish society and the lack of a clear stance from NATO allies.
This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian diplomat and former ambassador of Ukraine to Poland, Andrii Deshchytsia, as reported by LIGA.net.
Deshchytsia noted that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk did eventually acknowledge the drones were Russian — although even for such an obvious fact it took time. Still, he called it a good sign that the drones weren’t described simply as «unidentified flying objects.»
«I think this somewhat restrained assessment that this was direct Russian aggression against Poland was dictated by the wish not to create panic in society. And I get the impression that Poland is, of course, preparing and has been preparing for war, but they are cautious enough not to create an uncontrollable atmosphere, ” Deshchytsia said.
The second key reason is that Poland’s NATO partners have yet to deliver a clear assessment of the drone incident.
«I think that is what determined such a, let’s say, soft assessment of what happened from Poland’s side, ” Deshchytsia concluded.
