The self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko said that Armenia must be «very careful» to avoid following Ukraine’s path. His remarks come ahead of Armenia’s parliamentary elections and amid ongoing debates regarding Yerevan’s potential exit from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Lukashenko delivered these comments to reporters following the EAEU summit in Astana, according to the Belarusian state news agency BelTA.

According to Lukashenko, political rhetoric is currently intensifying in Armenia due to the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7. He also highlighted discussions about Yerevan potentially leaving the EAEU to pursue closer ties with the European Union.

«Armenians need to be very careful so that, God forbid, they do not repeat what happened in Ukraine… That is exactly how it all began in Ukraine. You remember this. This is crucial for the Armenians, who have just emerged from one war, to avoid ending up in a difficult predicament because of this. There is no need to rush…» They just need to think; they need to be wise people,» Lukashenko stated.

With these remarks, the Belarusian leader effectively mirrored the rhetoric of Vladimir Putin, who previously threatened Armenia with a «Ukrainian scenario» over its euro-integration aspirations.
