Russia attacked Kyiv after Trump-Putin call: CCD explains Kremlin’s «signal»
The attack on Kyiv occurred after a phone call between Trump and Putin. According to the CCD head, this is an attempt to force the U.S. to stay out.
The aftermath of the Russian attack on Kyiv
The overnight attack by Russian forces on Kyiv and Kyiv region took place immediately after a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. With this move, the Kremlin seeks to compel Washington not to interfere in European affairs and to abandon support for Ukraine.
Head of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) Andriy Kovalenko said this.
«By attacking Kyiv and Kyiv region, Russia is sending a signal to the U.S., which sounds something like this: don’t interfere and don’t help Ukraine. Putin still wants all of Ukraine, so that our state remains in Russia’s sphere of influence, ” the statement reads.
Unable to achieve success on the front lines, Putin has shifted to strikes on the rear. His goal is to bring Ukraine back into Russia’s orbit of influence.
The CCD head also warns that in conditions where Putin produces his own weapons, receives arms from North Korea, and gets support from China, while Western partners remain restrained in their resolve, «the consequence will be an advance on the Baltics.»
He adds that China’s rhetoric that «Russia must not lose» puts the West before a choice.
«China’s position that Russia „cannot lose“ actually puts the Western world before a choice: continue pretending that diplomacy without pressure can miraculously work and that Moscow can be „detached from Beijing,“ or finally realize that in this case, this rain will last a long time, and it is necessary to push the war further away, deeper into Russia and closer to China, rather than Europe, ” the statement reads.
He also calls for transforming the North Atlantic Alliance from a purely defensive to an offensive one. Such a change, according to Kovalenko, should be accompanied by tough economic strikes against Russia and its allies.
The CCD head adds that weapons for Ukraine, an offensive NATO strategy, and harsh sanctions against Russia and its allies are the only formula capable of stopping the further expansion of the war.
«Otherwise, all this will have to be done anyway, but the front line could be somewhere in the Baltics near the borders with Poland, in parallel with the war in Ukraine, if the current policy continues. We, of course, will still hold Russia back here. But the Baltics won’t, ” Kovalenko says.
